About Us

Mission

The Venue of Merging Art’s mission: “To preserve a historically significant former church building by transforming it into a unique venue in which various forms of artistic expression can merge together to promote, educate, entertain, and involve the community in the arts.”

History

The Venue of Merging Arts (V.O.M.A) is a non-profit/social benefit arts organization located in the National Historic Cambria City section of Johnstown housed in one of the recently closed churches.

Constructed in 1911 as St. Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church it served the Lebanese Christian community until 1971 when a new congregation that split off from St. Petka’s Serbian Orthodox Church in Woodvale acquired it. In 1977 the church was renamed St. George’s Serbian Orthodox Church.

No longer home to an active parish, the church building was acquired in 2008 by former Cambria City residents and is being re-purposed into a unique community arts center known as V.O.M.A.

Our Space

The main VOMA building (former church structure) is available for private rentals,

and is regularly used by the VOMA organization as:

  • VOMA Gallery on the main floor features local and regional artist’s works in a variety of mediums, as well as local plays, and musical performances.

  • Downstairs “Club VOMA,” a space featuring local and regional concert performances focusing on original music, as well as a lecture hall and classroom space.

We are currently raising funds and renovating the side house “artist in residency space” with plans for a 2014 opening. This will provide a place for visiting fine artists and touring musical artists to stay while showing/performing at VOMA, bringing more original music through Johnstown and great opportunities for collaboration and networking for local artists and musicians.
